Hey everyone! Exciting times ahead on the homestead as we gear up for the arrival of our latest batch of chicks and poults, courtesy of Meyer Hatchery. They've consistently delivered exceptional service in the past, making each order seamless and worry-free. While this particular order, placed back in January and shipped out today, hasn't had any standout moments yet, it's too early to form an opinion. But based on past experiences, my expectations remain high. Just to be clear, this shout-out is purely from my own positive experiences; it's not sponsored in any way. The only "loss" I've ever had was a Houdini chick that somehow escaped the brooder and disappeared without a trace. That one's on me, thoughāI still wonder what adventures it might have embarked on. It's a mystery how it managed to vanish, and I can only guess that nature took its course.
Being just one state away from Meyer really shortens the journey for these little ones. They get the VIP treatment with express shipping and warmers through USPS to keep them cozy. Itās pretty cool how resilient chicks are right after hatching, living off the egg yolk they absorbed before making their big entrance. So, with everything ready for our chick arrival, they hatched and were shipped out today. If all goes according to plan, we should be hearing their peeps at our local post office by tomorrow morning, or the day after at the latest. Honestly, the anticipation might just be the hardest part, well, that and the impending 6 am wake-up call to pick them upāthat bit I could do without. I'll be like this:
For this chick arrival prep, Iāve got everything ready in the RentACoop brooder. Thereās a neat heating plate and a backup ceramic bulb hooked up to an automatic thermostat to ensure the temperature is just right for our feathered friends. Itās smart enough to turn off if it gets above 95Ā°F because we want to keep our new arrivals snug but not too hot. Mixing chicks and poults means getting the feed just right, so Iāve got a special blend ready to make sure everyone grows up strong and healthy.
Last I checked the tracking before tonightās bedtime, at 5:32 pm, they were making a pit stop in Cleveland, OH. Their next jaunt is to Louisville, KY, which isnāt too far off from me. Considering how quick their journey's been so far, our chick arrival prep might be put to the test sooner than expectedāmaybe even by morning. And yep, itās hitting 10:00 pm; time for me to catch some zās if Iām going to be any use in the morning!
Canāt wait to introduce you all to the newest additions to our homestead. Hereās to hoping everything goes smoothly with no unexpected hitches. Got all the knowns covered, so fingers crossed the unknowns keep to themselves. Stay tuned for the fluff-filled update coming soon! š„š¾
