Hey there! Looking for a sturdy place to keep your poultry safe? Check out this large walk-in chicken run. It's made with some seriously tough steel pipes, and it's got a metal mesh that’s great for keeping your birds in.
Now, the mesh does a fine job of containment, but if you don’t have a big guardian dog like we do at HomesteadHaul™ to scare off the predators, you might want to beef up security a bit. We recommend adding some hardware cloth around the bottom for added predator-proofing.
About the cover – it’s waterproof and UV-resistant, but it doesn't cover the entire run. We noticed this and decided we will throw on an extra tarp for when the weather gets rough. You might want to do the same.
This run is pretty roomy at 13.1'L x 9.8'W x 6.4'H, and while larger sizes are available, this is the one we used and showcase in our videos. It’s all we needed for temporarily housing just 4 turkeys until processing. It could certainly hold more, but four was our number this year. There’s plenty of space for all sorts of birds – chickens, ducks, you name it. Plus, the door is tall enough that you won’t have to duck every time you go in.
The run comes with zip ties, which are a nice thought but aren’t the strongest. We switched to using Hog Ring Pliers – total game changer! Seriously, if you’re setting this up, do yourself a favor and grab a set on Amazon: Hog Ring Pliers. These pliers are perfect for attaching hog rings, which not only made the setup a breeze but also come in handy for so many other projects around the homestead. Our use of this run without a coop suits our turkeys just fine—they’d happily roost in a tree during a thunderstorm if they could! However, knowing that many of you will use this for backyard chickens, we strongly advise adding some additional shelter. At HomesteadHaul™, we just couldn’t leave our hens and our spirited rooster out in the cold—literally! If you’re in a place with chilly winters like us, don’t skip the coop.
